Importance of Policies and Procedures at a Startup

Is it important for startups to have policies and procedures in place?

As a startup, you are meant to be flexible in your approach to business. However, having policies and procedures (such as an employee handbook) in place can not only help create transparency and consistency within your organization, but will also help your employees understand the do’s and don’ts of your workplace.

What are policies and procedures? Policies and procedures are meant to be a guide for employees, aka acceptable behavior and what will not be tolerated. It also informs what they can expect from leadership. Key policies a start up should have in place include attendance, sexual harassment, code of conduct, and how to report incidents. Many of these are already a requirement by state and federal governments. Your handbook should also have your benefits listed as a quick reference on what is offered and who they can refer to if they have questions.

Why do they matter? Creating policies, and updating them while you grow, will help your employees understand culture, expectations, and help them escalate issues. Having policies and procedures in place can also come handy when defending against employee claims. Most importantly, policies and procedures will improve your bottom line via a more supported workforce.
